About
The Owen Abbott Memorial Splash Pad, located at Logan and Jefferson streets, opened in June 2021 to honor 13-year-old Owen Abbott, who died in a 2018 school bus accident. Donated by Britni and Nick Fritz, the baseball-themed park replaced an abandoned grain elevator, featuring a memorial stone, shelter, and free water access.
Key Historical Details:
  • Origin: Following a school bus accident in 2018 that took the life of Owen Abbott, a local middle school student, his family decided to donate a splash pad to the town as a "thank you" for the community's support.
  • Location and Development: The splash pad is located on the site of an old grain elevator near Logan and Jefferson streets. The town council, along with local officials, worked to acquire the property, remove the old structure, and prepare the site.
  • Design and Features: The 70-by-50-foot splash pad features a baseball theme, honoring a favorite sport of Owen Abbott. It includes a shelter, restrooms, benches, and a memorial stone at the entrance.
  • Funding and Opening: The project was funded by a large donation from the Fritz family and bolstered by nearly \(\$150,000\) in repurposed donations from a canceled pool project. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place in early June 2021.
Families love to come cool off when they’re able.
It looks like six people could sit at a table.
Multiply tables by places to sit.
Then multiply that by the balls too big to hit.
